About Make Friends Abroad

Make Friends Abroad is an independent guide to making friends after moving to a new country, with city guides for Europe’s big expat hubs and practical how-tos that work anywhere.

Who it is for

Expats, remote workers, digital nomads, Erasmus and international students, and anyone who has moved abroad and wants a real social life, not just colleagues and flatmates.

What we cover

  • City Guides: How to meet people and make friends in Europe's expat cities: Lisbon, Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, Berlin, Amsterdam, Dublin, Milan, Rome, Paris and Prague.
  • How-To: Practical how-tos for making friends as an adult abroad: where to start, what to say and how to turn a meeting into a friendship.
  • Clubs & Exchanges: Language exchanges, run clubs, sports, volunteering and other groups where newcomers actually meet people.
  • Solo Abroad: For digital nomads, students and anyone abroad on their own: meeting people without a ready-made network.

Our editorial standards

  • Facts are checked against official or first-hand sources before we publish, and we link to them where we can.
  • Every article shows when it was published and when it was last updated. Prices, opening hours and timetables carry the date we checked them.
  • We say what is not great as well as what is: costs, crowds, transport gaps and anything else you should know before you go.
  • No paid placements. If we ever publish a sponsored or partner mention, it will be clearly labelled as such.
  • We do not use AI-generated images of people. Photos are real and credited, or we use none.
  • Spotted something wrong or out of date? Tell us at contact@makefriendsabroad.com and we will fix it.

Who is behind it

Make Friends Abroad is made by the small team that is building MeetNow, a free app for meeting people in person. We mention MeetNow where it is genuinely useful and always say that it is our own app. Read our disclosure for details.
